The Dark Room

Yes indeedy folks I couldnt resist adding a discussion board for all things photographic to this little corner. I will be posting photos of one and all very soon...promise!
Whimwham

Excellent...I could do with some photo help!
Man In A Hat

Well just ask away! I am more than happy to assist with all photograpically related question!
Minnie the Minxtress

Well - you are clever MIAH.... I am about to start my final module for this academic year and I was hoping to hire out the photographic studio in college. I've never done this before, and although the tutors are very helpful, I was wondering if you had any tips or hints about setting up a studio with regards to lighting etc?
Miss Kitty Lou

Ooooh, I'm a happy Kitty now, I could talk photography for hours! I love it even more than shoes!

Lighting wise the big thing is think carefully about what you want first. I would recommend using one of the following twi lighting set ups
1. USe two big soft boxes each 45 degrees from your subject. If shooting against a black background thats it, if shooting against a white background, also aim a light at the background and ensure its two stops lighter than your subject. (if using black backdrop make sure its two stops darker than your subject) - this set up is called the page three set up as it has been used for that for so long
2. For moody shadows or nudes use one light with a snoot at 90 degrees to subject.

For high key images use the same lighting rig and adjust exposure on camera.

minx, if you need a model, i would be happy to oblige, being so near and that xx

Well this thread was well times MIAH...

I said i would ask if you MIAH could tell me how much it would REALLY cost to have a photo in poster size????

Any ideas?

xx
Selena Lix

i was gonna ask how much do professionals usually charge- what is a good price and when should you be wary?

Yes indeed. Posters XL provides very large prints as poster or canvas, poster format 200 x 100 cm £79.99. In honety i dont know how good they are as i get all my large format printing done on a proffesional Epson A1 printer - and i just fling the guy the odd bottle of port!

This is not the only option though. Exhibition size prints of 10x15inches mounted look superb, and means you can go for a Fuji Crystal Archive print . I dont know how much these cost as i i get discounted rates, but i expect £12 or so. I would highly recomend Fuji Crystal archive prints! The display of a photograph is 80% in the mounting and the framing.

Well it does vary hugely. Some people charge £20 with one print, but then charge £75 for each 6x4 print you want. The thing to be sure of is knowing what you are getting up front. Look at the photographers work, and decided if you like it. I know that sounds like a simple thing, but lots of people just dont do it. Next thing to do is establish:

How long the session is
Is make up and hair provided
How many prints will you get
How much are additional prints
Do they offer a CD of the prints
Can you upload the pics to the web
Will the shoot be in a studio, outdoors, or in your own home

Personally I provide a CD with the pics on, and permission to print images yourself, and use them unedited on the web.

This is a big consideration on cost.

A photographer who charges £20 for a shoot and then £75 for a 6x4 print, is going to give you 4 small prints for £300 while another photographer may give you CD so you can get 100 prints done if you want for the same cost.

Which funnily enough is what i do...

For a london shoot, in a studio, with make up and hair by our very own Ruby Rose, 2 1/2 hour shoot and 20 9x6 prints, + a CD of the images cost £300.

There are some cheaper, and some more expensive. As with anything have a look around and find someone who is providing what you want.

A big word of caution. Never book a photographer that insists you come to a shoot alone!
Minnie the Minxtress

Thank you darling hatster.x
Selena Lix

thank you very much MIAH - its good to know what to look for and when to be cautious Very Happy
Ruby Rose

Quite frankly I think everyone should book the Hatster, his work is wonderful - of course I am slighty biased Embarassed

Thanks for that MIAH..I wondered as i thought £450 for poster size was steep!!
Man In A Hat

£450...its a deal! I will do you three! and throw in a bottle of bubbly!
syntheticdarkness

just a quick comment aboot price of photograpy at places, i went to Studio 27 in Brighton and they are lovely there! I think the cheapest is £30 and thats for one photo methinks including hair make up and studio, your there for about 2 hours. But, I being the lucky stick i am got it free with a voucher they gave out last year. But as this is the BWi thought i'd just mention they are doing alot of burlesque and retro photography there right now!
DarklyDelicious Millicent

Naomi just did a absoulutely fab photoshoot today the pic are really gorgeous of her but couldnt buy any even though they said she qualified for student discount they would have still cost £499...so we will book again in few months time so she can get them..... Crying or Very sad

They did give her one print on CD and contacts so she has got them to stare at - apparently shes a photographers dream!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shocked Laughing
Man In A Hat

As my comments above, some photographers charge very little for the shoot and then charge a huge amount for prints. Be sure you know what is on offer when you book! I think its really unfair to invest time in having photos done, for two or three hours, then get the results and be told you cant keep them! Its why i provide a cd of photos with each shoot.
syntheticdarkness

I am just out for TFP right now
Muhahah
free stuff!
yes i am skint!
DarklyDelicious Millicent

Hi MIAH Very Happy

Yes we did know what the cost might be but before were able to buy at later date but no longer - i dont think it good to have to buy photos there and then you need to go away and think about it especially if its for something specific... I also think its a waste of their time and effort too, and they have lost our £500 too....still we can have others.. Laughing

ooh sounds like something I will be saving up for for my birthday!

I have been experimenting a bit at home - and I'm fairly pleased with some of the shots - not too Reader's Wives LOL

(well in my humble opinion anyway!)

I'm even thinking of using one as my avatar, but we'll see!

I just fancy being a pin up girl for a day.

And on the basis that this year I am just doing things if I feel like it ....

Smile
Minnie the Minxtress

What a marvellously sterling idea! 'Just doing things for oneself'.... something that I bet, most of us rarely do!

I am desperate to go out and get all dressed up again.... Mr Minx has fractured his ankle so is not up for doing anything except laying on the sofa, ploughing through his work on the laptop and I'm getting all frazzled with my final assignment for college this year... I NEED to do something for me too!

I need to jump across to the 'What's On' thread and we MUST make some plans to go out, lovely girls! Very Happy
Man In A Hat

well my dear I will be at movers and shakers again, and you know if you find yourself short of a man i am always happy to fill the gap.
Minnie the Minxtress

Ohhh you are a star, MIAH! Very Happy

Smiles pleased to hear its of some use and any help i can offer let me know.
Stuart

Actually if you are offering there is an affect that I am interested in and you seem to know a lot about pro photography. If you click this link (may need a myspace log in)it should take you to a very nice photo of Fanny Divine by David Lister. He seems not only to have used narrow depth of field, but also some kind of soft defocusing effect which I thought looked really nice. Is this a real life filter on the camera or some kind of photoshop effect? Any ideas would be really useful as I would love to replicate this kind of look in some of my own photos.

Thanks for the help.

(and thanks for looking at my website Ruby Rose and for the kind welcome. The website needs updating and colour correcting so you can see more recent stuff on myspace/stuartphillipson)
Man In A Hat

Fantastic photo. It looks to me like it was taken at a very good resoloution or on film. Their are two ways of getting that effect. The first is using a soft but sharp filter. These cost around £100 from B&W i think. They have a kind of mesh which mix a soft focus and at the same time The other way of doing it is to apply a layer in photoshop and apply a soften filter. Then change the opacity to 30-40% and then flatten.
Stuart

Thanks you ever so much for the help, I will definitely try experimenting with photoshop and maybe the filter if I can afford it!

arn't we all stunning?!!
Herr Geist

I'd slap random children for a shot with that gorgeous redhead in the pink shirt. RAWR!

I have just found this thread and I wanted to say ladies you all look amazing. And MIAH is very good indeed with the old camera! If you ever do another shoot I'd be happy to offer my make up services, it would be lovely to practise on such lovely faces, but I will be staying firmly behind the camera!
syntheticdarkness

Oh hunny, where are you based i have been looking for and MUA for ages!

I've promised myself a shoot not only of myself/my burlesque alter ego (which I hope shall emerge at the Liverpool workshop) but also some "arty" B&W shots with my gentleman. Who loves London. I smell a road trip Very Happy

By the way- is this the official "rogues gallery" page?
Man In A Hat

post away my dear!

Why thankyou Monsieur Chapeau Smile

This is all I have so far that leans towards retro. Taken in the changing room of Rockers England in the Northern Quarter (fantastic shop). I never did buy the dress though Sad

Is it ok if we post our recent burlesque pictures in here? I just really like the idea of

A: Sharing ideas / techniques
B: Showing off
C: Thanking the people who sit so patiently for me, with a bit of free publicity.
Herr Geist

I don't see why that would be a problem. Go for it! I'm sure the ladies here would love to see some of the work and you may even get someone interested in your style who wants to work with you.
Stuart the photographer

Excellent, then I will start with the rather spectacular Rosie Voodoo, seen here performing at the Slippery Belle. Really glad I managed to get close enough to get a good shot.

Herr Geist

haha THAT is a cool shot.
Stuart the photographer

Thanks! I nearly dropped my camera just before that shot as there were really quite large pyrotechnics to fire all the confetti onto the stage. Thank god for gyroscopically stabilised lenses.
Diva Hollywood

Hi honey good to see you hear and great shot
