the best red hair dye?

so ive been using Herbatint 'henna red' but i might try a more pinky shade

as it always washes out to copper, bah.

that schwarkopf live shades are good, but also dont stay in that long.

buggeration

red heads? advice?

i used to use garnier nutrisse  morello cherry back in the day, but it looks BROWN on the box now. WTF?

I'm afraid I'm no help there, although I did use a rather vivid shade once I shall pop by Boots tomorrow and go see what it was again.

When I go red I tend to stick to L'Oreal hairdye. It still fades out, just not as quick as a lot of other (Schwarzkopf stuff is the worst dye I've ever used when it comes to fading, so *any* other dye would be an improvement lol)
Ruby Rose

Sadly ladies red hair dye will always fade quicker than any other colour, no fun for those with white roots!  Embarassed
Miss Baby Bones

which is odd, as red shade is the hardest to bleach out.

the vividness of the red just washes away tho. bah.

its ok, ive found Herbatint bright red colour, that should do the trick. or ill turn myself orange. lol

I get my red hair dye from Sally's - they sell loads of dyes that the salons use, so you mix it up yourself. They have 2 shops in Brighton/Hove, one on Western Road and one on George St.

I think I need to change though as the RUSK one I started using has given me awful split ends, which I never got using LIVE.

Can anyone recommend any deep conditioning treatments?  My hair really needs it.

Aussie 3 minute miracle conditioner saved my hair after a particularly brutal phase of bleach/dreads/braids

Stargazer do some good colours but they don`t last as long....i was very fond of baby pink  for a while. The pink i found lasted longest was by Special Effects- you can buy it at haircrazy.com-they have a very good shocking pink...
I`m just a boring blonde now but i get salon type formulas from online shops like hairproductsonline.co.uk- i get Wella Koleston blond from them but they also do bright colours like reds and pinks and i find the colours are much better than the stuff you buy in boots...

bah cant be arsed with semi perm colours any more, i just wash my hair in the bath which means whatever colour i have goes in the bath with me. lol

I'm the other way! I had my red hair dyed brown in Feb last year and I can't wait for it to bloody grow out!!! Grrrrr! It was ok for a while but I'm fed up of it now! I'm banging on the doors of the russet lodge!
If it had been done semi perm I could have just let it wash back after a while and colour it again if I wanted  Sad  At the moment I have about 1 inch and half of red and the rest is a dull looking brown, I really need to do something with it! xxx

The doors of Russet Lodge are wide open my dear don't bear your shame any more come in come in and have a cup of tea with ginger Ruby!

i've been red years and ive used pretty much everything you can get. but now i just dye it once a week with directions. it also means that my body and bedsheets are always red too but meh.
Minty Darkstar

if you want permanent like, l'oreal majicontrast red is probably the best, it's what we used in my salon. but i tell ye. it's got hooked pigments in it that WONT COME OUT. so you'd have a job getting rid of it if you ever wanted to. bleach wont get it out.
Miss Baby Bones

havent heard of that one Minty, thanks

ive just found a bright red in the Herbatint range, haroo!  shall see what happens...

i cant wait to get rid of my black; fed up looking like an emo

haha! like a emo goth = emoth
EllaEmerald

I used one from superdrug that turned my hair flourescent pink, which was cool, but it was supposed to be red!! Can't remember what it was called though, helpful as usual.  Rolling Eyes
Miss Baby Bones

emoth, haha

ella, did you put it straight over your blonde hair tho?

I swear by Ricky Clark's Chilli Red for my hair. It washed out in 28 washes, but still leaves your hair reddy for a while. ANd the colour whilst washing out is still nice. I find most Loreal colorants make my hair look too unnatural. But maybe my hairs just wierd. Never tried permanent colours, like the flexibility of swapping and changing without wrecking my hair.

I don't know if you know but they've changed the formula (is that even right) for it so it doesn't appear to keep washing out. That's what I use and since it's changed it's much better, it's only for the first two washes the water runs red, otherwise it's got more staying power Smile

That's a couple of days after I'd dyed it (was a bit sloshed sorry!)

That's about three weeks (and god knows how many washes) later.

It's still pretty red Smile
Miss Baby Bones

aw lookit you Smile

thats a lovely red.

my chum uses schwarzkopf red and purple together, makes a lovely shade

if this Herbatint bright red isnt good for me ill just go back to schwarzkopf

it prob washes out on my hair more cos mine is absolutely cream crackered! lol

poor old hair

I use henna.  The colour's not precise, and it's messy, but makes my hair feel and look thicker.  Although I haven't used any since March, I plan to use some soon...
Lily Lain

I always wondered what Henna was like, I got a small sample from the local Lush shop, but I never have two hours spare to do a small test to see if I like the colour or not.

Does it make the hair shiny?  I know that it doesn't go the same colour all over, but does it go the general colour that you're aiming for?
Miss Baby Bones

minty's got a wig on amelie! d'oh! ;p

henna is a bit messy yes... it makes my mates hair (natural ginger) very gorgeous tho.

i used henna red by herbatint, that was kewl

just used crimson red by herbatint, its alot brighter so hurruh!

i used to work in a hair extension salon in brighton and ive had every colour hair dye on (except green)
and every colour extensions you can think (except green and orange. and brown!)

but god its such alot of work and really thinned my hair out. ill never wear extensions again cos itll wreck my hair.

we used mono fibre.

id never wear human hair. bleh!!

Yeah, it makes it a lot shinier.  Shockingly so, actually - with the Lush one, if you leave it for longer than 8 hours, the colour stops developing and it just gets shinier lol!  Lots of fun.  I think because it's a hair varnish combined with cocoa butter.  I don't know if it's the same with all other hennas, but the Neal's Yard one I used a while ago made my hair shiny too.

It does go the general colour that you're aiming for, but the best thing you can do is test on hair from your hair brush and then you'll know how long you want to leave it in for (two hours is more of a subtle change, 4+ for a more intense one).  As a general rule, you can add some paprika to get it brighter red, red wine for darker red, coffee for darker colour, rosemary for even more shine, etc.  Which henna did you get?

(And I know I sound like a dork, it's just that the henna's one of my favourite products... Rolling Eyes)
Miss Baby Bones

any colour will stop developing after 40 minutes

bleach goes on forever tho.. haha

I'm really glad you posted this BB, I was thinking aloud about dying my hair and my fella said "you'd look lovely as a redhead". So, I pondered the hair dyes in superdrug and bought LIVE hairdye in red passion, told my boy, and he went "oh god, you better not turn ginger". Strange thing.

But my hair looks a lovely colour, and it even goes will with the two random blonde streaks I have in my hair! All I need now is a lovely trim and I'll be away!

Please let me know if you know of any brighter reds that show up well on darker hair!
