Terrible Nails

Yeah, you guessed it, my nails are awful. It took years of my granddad tapping the back of my head as aversion therapy to get me to quit biting them. Now they grow to a nice length but they look awful. They keep splitting and layers of them peel off. They look dreadful. I can't even paint them to cover them up cause that dries them out and makes them worse. I so wish I could occasionally have lovely crimson nails.

I'm thinking of trying the Sally Hansen nailcare stuff to see if it works. Has anyone tried it? And is it any good?

Also, vitamin or dietary supplements that would help my nails (and my hair)?

Dipping your nails in warm olive oil is meant to be amazing for them  i did it years ago and it did help.  I use a nail hardener form boots and buff them and file them on a regular bases and that works.
Good luck

I'll give it a go. I'd try practically anything right now. How long do I have to dip them for?

I got the sally hansen nail growth miracle (gold bottle) last year. I balked at the price (about £Cool but it helped me grow my nails for my wedding, long enough to have a french manicure. I still have the same bottle too Smile

I'd second the oil thing - I used to work in a spa doing a lot of massage & my hands were constantly covered in oil, and my nails grew strong and fast! I'd say get a little bottle of a nice, natural oil and rub it into your nails & cuticles as often as you can be bothered.  xx

Solar oil is supposed to be good, when I had extensions the guy gave me a little bottle of that to rub into my cuticles. I think it was mainly almond oil Smile

I need to find it Smile

I've got some stuff from Lush, lemony Flutter, which is quit good, but the ends of my nails still get all manky. I bought some Sally Hansen stuff today so I'm gonna give that a go and see how I get on. *crosses fingers*

I know how you feel, my nails are so weak nothing works for them. I have acrilics now. They're not good for my own nails but I figure they're so bad anyway it won't make that much difference.

I had acrylic nails once. Never again. They feel so weird to me and I just can't manage to do anything cause I'm frightened they're gonna break off. The Sally Hansen stuff seems to be doing the trick though. They're still not great, but they're better. Very Happy

Arg! Acrylics ruined my poor nails, it took 6 months to get them back to 'normal'.
I have the same problem with weak, splitting, flaky nails. I tried the Sally Hasen stuff, but it didn't seem to work.

I've now got one for flakey nails from OPI, it's brilliant. The oil thing really works. Try rubbing some in at the end of the night before going to bed, and it would have sunk in by the time you get up in the morning Smile

Two options

Train as a nail technician - you end up getting a manicure once a week as other practice which makes your nails strong as hell

or

work in a garden centre making hanging baskets. Having you hands in compost all day which is full of nutrients does them a lot of good

On a serious note, take care of your cuticles as well as your nails. If you can't afford a proper manicure, do one yourself. Meaning shape, remove ragged cuticles, oil your cuticles and put on a conditioning treatment. Consider what you use to take off your nail varnish, and make sure you give your nails a break from polish occasionally.

A paraffin mask would give your cuticles a bit of a treat too.

The main thing is to keep it up, they are like hair. Once the ends are buggered you can only cut it off and wait for the new growth.

xx
