TattoosRuby feel free to move this if you feel it's in the wrong place, I just associate tattoos with makeup, just a bit more permanent.
Girls I need your advice and inspiration! I know what tattoo I want done (for starters*) but I'm not 100% where to put it.
Tattoo design
That is what I want done, I decided on it about 6 months ago, and have had it as my PC desktop or next to the PC every day since. I love it more now than I did then!
Problem.. my original plan was to get it tattooed on my lower back, but I've really gone off that. Few reasons..
1) I wear corsets a lot! So my lower back is almost never visible.
2) Even when I don't wear corsets I rarely show my lower back.
3) I want the tattoo for me, therefore I want to be able to see it without having to do exorcist things with my head.
But then I run into problems.. where else can I get it done?
I currently have one tattoo on each wrist, a cat leaping across my cleavage (well.. more into the cleavage) and a pentacle on my shoulder. All the tatts so far have been little, I want this one to be fairly substantial.
I'm playing with the idea of getting it on the top of my arm.
I'm obviously not expecting you girls to decide for me, but my creativity has gone for a walk so I need a fresh perspective.
*I may extend the tattoo later, I'm thinking possibly zebra print feathers extending up from it.
On the subject of tattoos, who here has been inked? What have you got? Or what would you want done?

Have you thought of the top of your thigh? Or up the side of your body from your hip upwards? Hmmm...
If you intend extending it I would go for top of the arm.
I have a few tattoo's in random places: Butterfly on right shoulder (wants covering)/ 3 star outlines behind my right ears/ tribal design bottom of back/ name in chinese up spine/ red and black nautical stars inside of right forearm. I have just had a half sleeve (ish) finished off and I will be getting more. I must admit I am very addicted to it. Think long and hard if you are considering it on your arm...can you live with it there?
Hope this helps

I'm not sure.. I love sleeves on other people, not sure it'd look quite right on me though.

I thought that about myself to be honest. I always said I would never get my arms done but I adore mine now, after thinking about it for a long time. I am planning a full sleeve eventually.
Why do you think it wouldn't suit? My reason was because I though my arms where too fat

Um.. snap..
I don't know.. so far I've gone for very small (not delicate as such) tattoos that I feel are quite girly and graphicy (is that even a word?), in my eyes at least. I'd need to be careful to make a sleeve look the same way. I know I'll never tattoo any colours on my body, and I'm not intending to get shading done, so maybe a bold monochrome design would work.
Edited to add: I'd love to see a photo of your sleeve

I recommend speaking to a tattoo artist about how you feel. I have a wonderful one who will advise me till the cows come home
I have just added you on myspace and I have a few pics of my tats on there

Need to find one, the guys who did my first two are great, but they're ex hells angels and I'm not sure about talking to them, seeing as body issues are involved (this tattoo is partly to do with my stopping self harming - it's my present to myself for allowing myself to heal). The lot who did my second two I like less so definately couldn't talk to them.

Maybe look around for a woman artist? I know that may sound a bit sexist, and I don't at all mean it to, but it's always worth trying.

It's worth a try, gutted that my usual piercer doesn't do tattoos as well lol
Anyone in or around London know any good tattooists?

I love tattoos!!! I really want one done but they are so expensive. I have so many ideas. I want a sparrow, a pentacle and ivy on my foot. Me and my best friend are going to get matching tatts done hopefully too.
Why dont you have it done on your calf?

Kitty - have you ever seen the tattoo on Fern Cotton, the TV girlie? She has a beautiful one that spreads up from her hip and fans out across her waist on each side, underneath her ribcage.
I know just what you mean - I have one on my left wrist, a pentacle on the back of my neck, a huge one across my upper back and a medium sized one on my lower back. I'd LOVE to be able to see the ones at the back with my own eyes, but have to rely on a mirror! I would love one laid out like Fern's but just haven't got the money to do that right now!
I'm sure there was a tattoo thread running over on the MoB and there were suggestions on there about good tattooists.
My tattooist is based in Orpington but his prices have shot right up!

How about below your belly button? You can see it yourself. It can also be covered up or put on display with the right top/trousers. I have one on my right arm. It's about three inches long but is quite high up so hides nicely under t-shirts. However I dont regret it and show it off whenever I can

My stomach isn't exactly my favourite part of my body. I'd be worried about getting tattoos there because of weight loss/gain.
I think I'm going to have to sketch a few idea this weekend

there is a great woman tattooist in Waddon, near to croydon, she does fine line, and did the one on my ankle, her name is caroline,
I have a cherub on top of my hip, cherub riding a dolphin on my ankle, a flower on the front of my foot, and a cherub sitting in a flower on my lower back, with my boy's names in japenese underneath,

There was a huge thread on the MOB about this, my tattoo is on it if you want to have a look.
I wouldn't get one done on your stomach if you ever want kids as it will stretch and distort,(so I've heard) which is the last thing you want!
I have mine on my neck because I didn't want to be looking at it all the time but it sounds like you want the opposite.
I would suggest your arm or leg, There is a big difference between one tattoo on your arm and a whole sleeve so its not jumping in with both feet. Just be very very sure what you want done!
if you fancy travelling to Brighton I had mone done at Temple by hand, the guy was really nice, informative and helpful.
I would suggest going on a reccommendation from someone who has already had one by a particular artist, word of mouth is the best way to find one.

Hi Kitty!
My advice would be to think long and hard about where you want it done. Remember that tattoos are for yourself not for everyone else. Few people realise I have a tattoo and I like it that way - it is personal to me not just like wearing a nice t-shirt or a piece of jewellery for everyone to pass judgement on. I apologise if this sounds patronising in any way, it really isn't meant to but you to have to really consider where life might take you especially as you are still so young. You can still love a tattoo whilst regretting where you put it... I can go to a meeting and still look completely professional. Whether people judging you because of tattoos is right or wrong, you can't prevent people doing it!

tatsthe only problem with the top of the arm is that is rather common and also, tatoos there, it may jsut be me seem to be less femine. i think more men tend to have tatoos there, i would sugest you bottem, hip or side of the thigh. But if you change your mind and would like it to be smaller then above your ankel may be nice

half naked tattoed ladies... life is getting better by the day!
coughs yes right back to being in disguise as a lady...right um...ok lets try that again!
oh they are pretty! did they hurt much when you had them done? I have heard the neck is really painful for tatts. how did you pick the design?
tis hard to get the full impact of the hair from behind as it where but think i prefer the black personallly.
|
EllaEmerald
|
I had it done by hand with a needle so the pain was minimal, the design is my wedding date in Roman numerals in dominoes, I made it myself!
The blonde was supposed to be blonder than that but after having black hair for so long it was a nightmare. I had a year of weird hair colours after I got married. Hubby is so relieved I've gone 'Back to Black' !!

I have one on my back and prefer it there...cos I can't see it everyday it's still a lovely surprise when I do catch a glimpse of it in the mirror...I also have a medium size one on my upper arm and I admit to regretting the placement of that...I'll be sticking to my back from now on...
As to tatt artists...when I was living in London I came up to Birmingham to get ink by Jo Harrison at http://www.modernbodyart.co.uk/
she is amazing...and so worth the travel!!!

None of this will help you choose a location that shows or is covered up while wearing a corset. I'm just bored.
My first tattoo. 11 years old now. The guy who did this one has actually been tattooing in London on and off for the past 10 years. I do not know which shop.
Second tattoo. A friend of mine did it in her home. She's very good but no one wants to hire a female tattooist for some reason. Even though she was apprenticed by one of the best artists in Florida.
The last one I got. This is my favorite. I was very pleased with this guys work. It sits on the inside of my right forearm.
So, there ya go. My tattoos.
I planned on having a lot more by now but I always find something else to spend my money on. Of course, I always wish I'd gotten the tattoos instead once I get bored with whatever else I decided to get.

I definately need more tattoos. Correct me if I'm wrong people but I think women tattoo artists do quite well in the UK? A friend of mine had someone come to his house, she is really good and always has work. Anyone else has any experience of sexism in this industry? Alot of women would probably prefer a female, especially some of the places they have done!!

Sounds like I got it done by same guy as you Ella - pain free! (although noone believes me!)
The fact that tattoos cost many pounds is a prohibitive factor though - boo hoo

Did you get yours done in Temple Nancy? Thats where you and I will be heading as soon as your fett touch Brighton soil Kittie.

Well I'm 2/3 of the way through my story tatt (sounds odd but its the best way to describe it) I have my oriental angel on the bottom of my back, now I have cherry blossom weaving up to my shoulder and the final piece will be the phoenix on my shoulder which is set for when my divorce finally finalises!

I had a tattoo on my thigh of a cheetah (in the typical running pose). I absolutely love it, you can show it or not as the fancy takes, and it looks really stunning when in swimming costume or similar. Was once said that it was the fastest thing on four legs on the leg of the fastest thing on two, which I decided to take as a compliment! I had it done about 8 years ago by Lal Hardy in London who apparently is some tattoo guru and I have to say that the colours are absolutely amazing and have not faded one bit.

Fantastic female tattoo artists in London:
http://profile.myspace.com/index....viewprofile&friendid=14086790
Tiny Miss Becca - Blood Brothers, Holloway Rd
http://profile.myspace.com/index....iewprofile&friendid=134325752
Valerie - Frith Street Tattoo, Frith St., Soho
Becca's tattooed me and I have plans on a piece for Valerie at some point in the future. I've met both women and they're both adorable!
As for placement, I tend to go for placements that suit the shape of the piece. I like long designs on calves, long designs on arms, wide designs on chests and wide designs on the lower back... x

I have a black rose on my tummy that I've had since I was 18. I've always said I'd have more but never got round to it. I went in for a Lion cos I'm a Leo but they were all scary looking things - so I've considered having a sun or the sunsign for Leo instead.
I've been thinking of having another done but I have to keep it covered because of work. Some of the kids I teach have seen the one I have when I've reached up to turn the projector on (ceiling mounted) and my top has come up a bit... So it kind of limits the places I can have one.

I'd like a little one but I'm just too weary of it hurting! I'm bad enough plucking my eyebrows! And I don't know where I'd have one or what I'd have!

having your eyebrows plucked hurts worse than a tattoo
I won't lie, the first time I got a tattoo, I was afraid. I thought it was going to hurt a lot. It was my 18th birthday and I didn't wanna spend it whining about my tattoo. The first line he put in made me sorta go "GAH!" but I kept my cool and after that it just felt like instant sunburn. It wasn't unbearable, but I knew he was doing something to my shoulder. After the first five minutes, I could actually forget he was working on me as I talked to my friends and the artist.
I've only had two tattoos since, but I knew what to expect with each one. The one on my stomach sorta surprised the artist because she said most people can't take the belly tats. I only flinched once and that was because it actually tickled me.
So, yeah, it's not as bad as you think.

I'd love to get more tattoos, at the minute I've got a butterfly and a good luck charm on my lower back, a swallow on one foot and 'man's ruin' (naked-ish lady in a martini glass) on my other foot.
All done by different artists in Hull, the last one (my lady) was done by a friend in his kitchen at home! I was suffering with a whacking hangover so I sat there with my foot on the kitchen table with a cuppa in hand.
I love the sensation of having a tattoo done, the apprehension before, the tingling during and the relief afterwards!

haha that's how my belly tat was done. I was laying on a big brown couch and she had to straddle my knees to get proper access to my stomach. Her husband is a good friend of mine and he just sat there playing XBOX. So it wasn't naughty at all. It was just... odd. haha.
I watched her sterilize everything though. I've hung out in enough tattoo shops to know what's safe and what's not. She was super clean so I wasn't worried.
|
Miss Fox

Snap! My friend Iain's got an autoclave set up in his kitchen and it wasn't as if they were cooking or anything!
|
Herr Geist

haha yeah, so does she. and before that, she had a connection for sterile stuff. This girl wouldn't even take a drink of water while she was tattooing because she was really paranoid about germs. It helps when your tattoo artist is a hypochondriac.
