Many thanks to Nikki (Editor), Nitr0gene (Reviewer) & the rest of the Devolution team for their support for our May 22nd event (www.devolutionmagazine.com). This is a review of the event as published in Issue 22.
"Heresy N Heelz
As I walked into the bar area just outside of the main room at the Rockhouse in Derby, I knew I was in for a treat tonight! Heresy N Heelz’s second official club night had attracted the most diverse range of people I had ever seen in one room. Busty burlesque beauties to my right, latex-clad gentlemen to my left, and the cream of the crop in fetish couture mingling with one another was making this a sight for sore eyes! I spoke to the awesome burlesque dancer, Miss Pink & Fluffy, who helped organize this event about what makes Heresy N Heelz different from other clubs. She told me that her and her husband Jules have always liked to attend fetish events, goth clubs, and burlesque shows, so why not combine them all in one hit and get the best of these scenes together under one roof? And this was the fruit of their flowering idea!
As the night was building up to its first set of performances, the atmosphere was electric and full of eager anticipation. The gorgeous and very talented Liberty Pink wooed the crowd with her sharp wit and cabaret singing, and then introduced each of the night's entertainers. First on was Mademoiselle Lili La Scala with her Butterfly act. This was quite simply the most beautiful fusion of opera and striptease I had ever seen. While she effortlessly teased the crowd, she sang a flawless rendition of Madame Butterfly that sent my skin into goosebumps! Following Lili La Scala was the raunchily-titled “Behind the Bike sheds, again!” by the taunting curves of Miss Pink & Fluffy, and I can tell you that her show was definitely an eye-popper. Onlookers watched and cameras flashed as Pink and Fluffy strutted her stuff in a very cheeky schoolgirl ensemble to “Another Brick in the Wall” and “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun!” then scrawled “I Must NOT Snog Girls!” on her blackboard. As if that wasn’t enough, we were then treated to the delight of Slinky Sparkles with her tribute to Elmer Batters* . Miss Sparkles was wielding two huge sheets of gold-like wings on a soaring butterfly in a very tasteful leopard print number and took on the personality of a lioness, prowling around the stage and ending with a delightful nipple-tassel swinging display! Just when I thought this couldn’t get any better, we were graced with the presence of Natsumi Scarlett dressed in a Geisha robe with a parasol. She took a slightly different approach to the other dancers and started her show amongst the crowd, snaking her way hypnotically to the stage. It was difficult to keep your eye on Natsumi! Her moves glided and flew like a dragon chasing its prey, ending her performance by dropping “dead” after drawing a (fake) samurai sword and spilling glittery blood from her tattooed torso. The 1st act of the evening drew to a close with a top-hat sporting Liberty Pink singing the “Masochistic Tango” in true cabaret style.
While everyone worked their way over to the bar outside the main room, this gave me a chance to check out some of the stalls in the smaller room. I met Chris from Rubber Luv who was exhibiting some beautiful latex goodies; skirts, dresses and t-shirts for men and women at very reasonable prices. I also checked out some of the amazing hand-made leather corsets from DzR Darkwear. Strictly Sensuous displayed their stunning array of cloaks, capes, feather fans, Madri Gras Masks and cute little burlesque-inspired hats. A DJ stall pumped out a mixture of darkwave, classic goth and EBM which made the atmosphere positively burst with people, young and old, big and small, swaying to the pounding beats.
After taking some pictures and chatting to some very friendly attendees, including Poppy Scarlett who walked around offering free sweeties from a tray, it was time for the Best Dressed Contest. On stage came a latex-clad Catwoman, a saucy butler, a latex sex doll, a big-breasted burlesque fairy, a bellydancer and a Lolita chick. After getting the votes from the crowd via a cheer-o-meter (Liberty Pink getting the crowd to cheer for their favourite outfit) the winner was Cindy the Sex Doll, with runners up being the aptly titled “wing and tits” fairy and the bellydancer who shook their stuff for the crowd. Smiles and delightful applauds were had by all.
Another outfit change and Liberty Pink was back on the stage wielding her forked tongue and stealing lollipops from the audience, introducing part two of the evening’s entertainment. Firstly was the wonderful Lili La Scala with her not-for-the-faint-hearted broken glass dance to Nine Inch Nail’s “La Mer”, after stripping almost in a tantrum and climbing onto a box spread with broken glass! It certainly made one or two of the audience members wince! The always enthusiastic Miss Pink and Fluffy graced the stage with her curves once again to her OO-Heaven James Bond-themed show. We could all tell that she was shaken, not stirred as she led a graceful fan dance to several bond theme tunes. A very cheeky number indeed! Slinky Sparkles showed us that love, in all its forms, really does hurt, by dragging a bin bag of fake body parts onto the stage wearing a large overcoat and heels. Wielding a wanted poster, she stripped her coat to reveal a bloody negligée and danced with a very cute skull, trying to convince us that she didn’t kill her lover… oops! Last on was Natsumi Scarlett, with a breathtaking performance. Once again she approached the stage from the dance floor behind the crowd in a huge white baroque-inspired dress and beehive wig and flittered like an overdressed butterfly to Moulin Rouge’s “El Tango de Roxanne”. Her unpredictable, almost angry, stripping of her gown led to the unexpected reading of a very raunchy book, immediately bursting into flames! This caused Marie to shed her dress completely and douse herself in talcum powder from an oversized powder puff. She taunted the crowd, covering the photographer’s pit with talcum powder while the music reached a crescendo and she made her dramatic exit. We were all left astounded and BEGGING for more! After bringing out all of the acts onto the stage for one last bow and another cute song from Liberty Pink, I could only decide that Natsumi was my favourite performer of the evening! I was almost left in some sort of daze after that treat!
I caught up with Natsumi later on in the evening at the bar, sporting a beautiful latex dress, and she explained that her inspiration from her last act came solely from that particular song and the love for the Marie Antoinette era. She wanted to somehow incorporate the range of emotions, from coy, to rage and how to use fire and the powder puff. I wished her a safe journey back to Amsterdam and continued to chase Poppy Scarlett around the room for more free sweeties!
Watching the dance floor fill with movers and shakers in PVC, latex and lace, I couldn’t help but feel that the venue may have been a little too big for this event. Not saying that I didn’t enjoy every minute of it; the people, the performers, and the atmosphere, but I feel it could have been a bit more packed-out, so to speak. At the end of the evening we packed up the Devolution stall, said our goodbyes and hugged the various members of staff and promoters and made our long journey back to Oxfordshire. Let’s hope we get to visit them again… I know I certainly would!"

* We would like to point out an inaccuracy in that Slinky Sparkle's show described as "a tribute to Elmer Batters" was in fact entitled "Voodoo Potion" - a result of a late show change and our reviewer using an earlier press release for some event details - we apologise to Miss Sparkles for this error on their behalf.[img][/img]
