Natural product reccomendations

I know Ruby will like this Wink

Im giving up on all my stupid expensive products as my skin is worse than its ever been, ive been using clarins and elizabeth Arden (i dont deny these could work for some people so not dissing them) but they have made my skin worse!  Mad
Im going to go au natural and look at using rosewater etc but can anyone recommend inexpensive pure natural cleaners and moisturizers? I do have an oily t-zone so something light.

Thanks girlies xxx

It might be worth checking the sources on that one... Lush's policies: http://www.lush.co.uk/LushLife/WeBelieve.aspx

I worked at Lush for over a year (past tense!!!) and am most definately not convinced by probably half of their products. Some things are fantastic, but many things are just average (or below) and overpriced. It's a real shame because the company has some really really good ideas.

At Miss Ruby's recommendation, I switched from a regular facial moisturiser and use aloe gel. It is wonderful stuff and has cleared my skin up no end. I get dry exzema patches though *sniffle* which I treat with Bio Oil and Estee Lauder daywear. The Estee Lauder cream is wonderful - but too rich for the whole of my face!

Have you looked into making your own products? Try googling some recipes. I love home made cleansers and soaps.

Ruby revealed macadamia oil to me on a recent visit but I must admit I want to know how I can replace a cleanser with something more natural

Yes Ruby mentioned that to me too and rose water. I think my skin is screaming for natural products!

Ah ha my favourite topic!

There are many things you can use to cleanse you skin, natural yoghurt bizarrely is great, almond oil is very gentle and rich in vitamin e to which you could also add a couple of drops of glycerine and for oily skin add a few drops of apple cyder vinegar. Remove the mixture with damp cotton wool in gentle upward strokes.  Rose or orange flower water make excellent toners although witch hazel is good it can be quite strong so I would recommend applying it on damp cotton wool pads to dilute.

There are also gentle ways of exfoliating papaya or pineapple juice are two of the best.  The naturally occurring fruit enzymes will aid with the release of the dead skin cells on the surface of the skin.  When giving facials I usually apply a layer of gauze that has been soaked in papaya to the clients skin obviously you might not want to do this at home, but gently patting the juice onto you skin is just as good.  However, do not rub this in, the enzymes are quite powerful leave them to sit gently on your skin and splash of with tepid water and pat you skin dry.

This is the best point to add your mask, it's extremely simple to make your own Kaolin is an amazing clay with healing and restorative properties which you can mix with rose water to form a paste then add any number of wonderful ingredients for your skin type, I always add a teaspoon of almond oil to prevent the mask setting and cracking everywhere.  Essential oils are lovely to add or nourishing oils like macademia, rosehip or avocado (unrefined is better) if adding essential oils never use more than two or three drops.  For very sore or angry skin conditions colloidal oatmeal can be used in a variety of ways you can dissolve some in the mask, a few cups in the bath with soften and thicken the water it creates a protective layer on the skin and is extremely soothing.

As for moisturising I now only use oils which are an amazing source of essential fatty acids and vitamins, macademia, rosehip, jojoba, avocado in  equal amounts then half that of vitamin e.  My skin now gets most unimpressed if I dare to put ordinary moisturiser on it.  Macademia regulates sebum production and keeps the skin supple it's the closest mimick to your skins natural oils on the surface of the earth and rosehip is wonderful for those concern about ageing (sorry - but once you hit 28 you should look at using something a little more caring in that department as this is when the cellular ageing process begins).

You can get everything I mentioned online very reasonably here;

If anyone needs any recipes email me your skin type and any conditions that are bothering you to rubyrose@thebwi.co.uk and I will send you a personal recipe.

NB. when using a new product always patch test by applying a small dot behind your ear or on the inside of your elbow, ideally you should wait for 24 hours, so do it before you go to bed you should have a good idea by the morning if there's any redness or itching do not use it.

Also never never never use essential oils neat on anything.

Enjoy!

Are these products good for removing makeup? Especially eye make up!
Ruby Rose

Almond oil is great for eye make up it just dissolves mascara you can apply it with a cotton bud and it just slides off.

Do I need to mix the oils with anything when applying? Going to go for a mixture of almond oil, macadamia then at night add avocado and vitamin E...can these all be mixed together? Questions Questions!
Ruby Rose

They can indeed be mixed together, although I wouldn't recommend leaving the mixture for more than a month unless you have at least 3% vitamin E oil in the mixture to act as a preservative.

and then do I apply it to my face or do I need to mix it in with the base cream?

I got some delightful testers from Neals Yard and some rose water, my skin looks a lot better after i cleansed etc than when I used my other products, also placed an order with Balwins too! x

I really like Neals Yard Wild Rose Beauty Balm - you can use it as a cleanser or as a really moisturising balm for your face - makes yuor skin glow, is really gentle and smells  delicious!

Ooh great thread.  Ruby it sounds like you need a trip to Marrakech, they sell loads of great natural products, your usual rose oil and they swear by Argan oil.

I have been most dissatisfied with moisturisers these days.  I put palmers cocoa butter on my face but once i hit the office I feel as if my skin is really dry/tight, but when I touch it my skin is still soft.

Can you recommend any good natural moisturiser?  I am 31 and need to preserve my youth!!!
