I need a changeMy hair is long and straight, and all one length. It's a medium brown colour as you can see by my pic (I can provide more if needed).
I really want to do something different, but I'm not sure what would suit me as I have been alternating between bobbed & long (and whatever came in between) but usually the same length. I have had a fringe, but my husband doesn't like a fringe on me
I've been playing around on the ivillage site because you can play around with some cuts and colours and superimpose them on your photo (good fun by the way )- but you have to pay if you want to "try on" any more than about 6 styles.
I can't go for anything too eccentric because I'm a teacher and I think mad cuts or colours would be frowned upon.
Any ideas?

You could invest in curlers and curl your hair. Or try pinning your hair up in different styles - there's a few topics on this forum with great website links to cool hair styles. if you fancy dying it perhaps you could go another shade of brown? Subtle but it's a change.

My hair is quite straight and even when I had it in a bob it didn't take a curl. I curled it once with heated rollers and the curls just fell straight out When I was younger and had it permed (I was 13) the hairdresser had to leave the perm solution on longer than usual.
I will keep looking at the other topics - I think I will keep my colour, because people have complimented me on it before, even tho I don't think its much. But I definitely need a cut to put a bit of life into it.
Thanks.

I did have a massive drama when I cut my own fringe one Christmas eve while we were about to go out. Hubby was rushing me and it wasn't straight so it got shorter and shorter & it ended up about an inch above my eyebrows! Pretty cool style, but not something I had intended and I didn't think I had the face shape at all...
He's quite picky about hair and what I wear, but not controlling as such. Its good that he takes an interest I suppose

Well I did it, I had about 3" chopped off, some layers cut in and a bit of a side fringe. It looks nice but I was considering having something a bit retro done - and its definitely not that.

I have really straight fine hair that also drops perms really quickly (I had one hair dresser who told me I had to sleep with a pair of tights on my head - torso part over perm legs tied under chin to hold thing on) did nothing to support the perm but I imagine the guy wet himself every time he thought of me doing it.
I've found that moussing my hair with firm hold mousse then drying thoroughly and hairspraying it before putting in heated rollers does wonders for holding a curl.
If you've had a little chopped off and some weight taken off you might find that helps too.
With your bone structure you could carry a really glam 40s look .... think Hedy Lamar in Ziegfeld Girl

If I remember this rightly, Ruby said that you have to leave the heater curlers in until they are completely cold and then don't brush your hair straight away as it wil brush the curls out.

Ok I think I'll give it a go tomorrow. I think the ones I've got are pretty big but the smallest ones will be ok. I'll just have to be patient. I rememer doing it for the school prom a few years ago but they dropped out within an hour or so!
Thanks
