i am looking for burlesque training.

hello, i am looking for a training position in the burlesque scene.

i work on river boats at the moment as an assistant skipper and securaty officer, but i would like to break into the burlesque scene.

i used to be a roadie for a few rock and punk bands before i went on the road with a new age traveling convoy back in 1993. going to festivals and setting up bars, such as the dog and vommit and the boucan ear, selling beer and cocktails and creating a nice place to sit.

i worked as a roadie, humping and setting up equipment for, sonic relief, turtle liberation front, experiment, conch, the sea, back to the planet, chumba wumba and revolutionary dub warriors.

i also used to work at the punk squat club called the poison club in hackney fetching drinks for the bar.

i would like to learn the berlesque scene and would like to help out in a trainee type position.

i am getting my securaty industry associated licencing soon and can pull pints, serve food, be polite and courtious,

i can also hump equipment upstairs and back down again, help with artwork and idea's, provide securaty, give messages, be a runner and help with costumes.

i spent three years at college doing an open college foundation in garment construction, pattern cutting and fashion design and passed.

i work as a day skipper and securaty guard for a private members club in west london even though i hav'nt applied for my s.i.a card yet.

i served with a nato force protection service in intellegence for 6 years. but dont let that scare you.  Smile

so where do i go from here, is it worth going to a school for traning in the industry or can talk to a promoter to offer my services and learn the trade?

i am also retraining to become a tourist guide in london to help and look after the tourists.

i would eventually like to write and create my own acts for myself or other performers to perform. i have a love of old time comedy and variety acts, 1900's to 1950's.

if anyone can help i would be very appreciative and hope somone can help put me onto the right track.

cheers and all the best,

yours, rex.

probably the best training you can get is to go to as many burly shows as possible, as theres so many and they're all quite different.

if theres one you like then at a suitable time politely approach the promoter/organiser

(eg not during the show, they'll be busy! maybe via email)

and ask if you can help out.

its good to spot the difference between a 'corporate show' and a show thats run for the love of it. the latter will likely be run by only 1 or 2 main people who organise the whole thing, and its their baby.

however all shows are most likely run by friends of the organisers, as im sure you already know its just nicer working with people you know you get on with.

but that doesnt mean be becoming a regular on the scene (clubs and/or forums) you can't meet people and start helping out.

maybe do some 'male burlesque stalking'

find the male burly acts out there you like and ask if they would be up for mentoring you.

they can only say no! so as long as you're polite it can never hurt to ask.

alot of the guys are london based, but warren speed is up in newcastle.

good luck!

thanks miss baby bones, that is sound advice and pretty much the plan of action.

i am also working on an act myself and perfecting the act and working on costume, jokes, script dialoque and audience partcipitation part of the act.

cant say too much now but it's gonna be good i hope.

thanks for the good advice and cheers.  Smile

i am polite and respectfull, so i find that helps a lot. i will chill out in my no. 2 dress uniform and be friendly and see what comes my way.

i will keep an eye out for performers i like and could possably help in the future.

thanks again.
