Hot Rollers (am i doing something wrong?)

I just got some hot rollers (Nicky Clarke if the brand makes any difference)... and i followed the instructions to a t but something went wrong....

1. Used on nearly dry hair (added some hairspray just to be sure)
2. Left rollers to heat for about 15mins
3. Put into hair
4. Left for half an hour (as advised in instructions)
5. Took rollers out to reveal NO CURL WHATSOEVER

I never usually have trouble with regular rollers but i do have to wear them all day for them to be curly in the evening which is why i tried the hot rollers....

Ladies who know about hair, am i doing something wrong???? I can't believe they didn't even work a wee bit! Also, i don't know if i didn't let them heat long enough but after i removed it roller from the cradle/heater thing and put it in my hair it was cold after about 2/3 minutes.... is that usual... i thought they would stay hot, at least for a while....
Am i just being a dummy? Do they need to heat longer (how long do most people put their rollers on to heat?

Sorry to put such a long question on but my brain is fuddled by the fact that they didn't work at all!

first time i used my hot rollers i could have cried they just didnt work but last time i used pantene curl gel spray on each strand before i rolled it. i also used less hair and only the mid sized rollers.

i dont know much so please don't fry your hair taking my advice but i just didn't turn off the base while i was rolling them and closed the lid each time. okay so i burnt my fingers a little but it was worth it!

took the curlers out 45 mins later and wow they were just wicked!! when i took out each one, i let the curl drop and spring back then attacked it with pantene ice shine hairspray (i don't normally use pantene but it was om 3for2 at boots!)

once all done, stuck a hair net on until i was just about to go out and voila...they actually lasted three days!

i hope this helps a little but honestly keep trying cos i really thought mine were a waste of money at first

Interesting
I might try mind again as I have just been using mouse and those curly things. But I got some tresame stuff that Millie recommended but you need to use heated rollers if you use it on cold you end up looking like a sea urchin not a good luck and stressful to find out just before you leave to go to a gig.
How long did you leave your rollers in for?

Emerald, I use Carmens, they're quite old fashioned, so I leave them to heat for at least half an hour, and whilst I roll them onto my hair, I keep the heat on and close the lid every thime I pick a roller. I normally put hairspray on the hair before the rollers (I always do it on dry hair), however, sometimes I forget, BUT it doesn't make a difference if I only spray it whilst the rollers are on.
Another tip I could give you is use the smaller rollers.

My hair is really annoying as I have lots and curling tongs don't work. Even with the rollers, they don't last many hours...Next time maybe try some setting lotion, although I don't know anything about it, actually if someone here can recommend a brand it would be great. I haven't seen any in Boots so maybe it's a specialist product?!

Hope this helps for next time...

Patene curl gel spray is fantastic to put on before your curlers work really well.

I use heated bendy rollers they seem to work quite well for big curly hair. I'm yet to find something that gives be beautiful ringlet curls though. xxx

Oooh goody one of my favourite subjects, prepared to be bored to death;

If you have the time to spend the whole process goes like this;

1. Wash your hair twice and condition, ensure that all residue from your conditioner is thoroughly removed.

2. Towel dry hair and apply a styling aid such as hair mousse (I find John Friedas gives particularly good hold).

3. Blow dry your hair or leave to dry naturally ensuring that your hair dries falling in the direction in which it is to be styled. Your hair must be completely dry before using heated rollers or your curls will drop out immediately.

4. Once your rollers are at the required temperature you will need to section your hair according to the style you wish to achieve and the direction in which you will be placing the rollers. A section of hair should be the same length and width of a curler and hair should be rolled in the direction that you want the finished style to fall. To large a section of hair will result in no curls.

5. For optimum results leave the curlers in until they are cold, then carefully unwind each one and brush/comb hair into place and apply hairspray.

Hope this helps.

Must try this!! Rollers for xmas!!

Basically, throw away your instructions, they're rubbish! As people have said, make sure your hair is completely dry, use a specialist spray (I use Wella Shockwaves curl defining spray), don't switch off the cradle between taking out rollers, and use the smallest size roller (the curls will take longer to drop out and will be bigger than you think). But my best bit of advice is leave them in your hair for longer! Everyone seems to mess up their first go with heated rollers - I know I did, the curls dropped out within minutes - so just experiment. I find that if I leave the curlers in for three hours or so the curls are great and last a couple of days. They're a bit crispy from spray, but don't brush or comb them, just separate them with your fingers. If you do brush them they'll turn into soft waves which is a nice effect, but different. It's a case of working out what works best for you, but they will work, trust me - I have very long, very fine hair which i thought was completely uncurlable, but even I managed it eventualy!

Oooooh, this is quite helpful! I was thinking of getting some heated rollers, but my hairs quite long and thick so I'm a bit skeptical as to whether they'd be any good!

Thankyou!

With thick hair use smaller sections and more rollers.

haha i ran around at dadalesque on sunday showing off my crispy curl...

the front one was so hard it poked me in the eye when doing aerial OUCH!

have an audition today and not got space in my bag for entire cradle... i use babyliss www.youcurl.com for times like this

i wanted to wear curlers today but teaching babies to dance while wearing a giant bobble head may be just a little too alternative!

i did however wear my hair in pincurls for babyballet class today with a great big quiff...

the little 3yr olds were more concerned with 'dainty toes and naughty toes' demonstrated by my awesome hello kitty socked feet!

kittens for distraction...always useful!

p.s. damned youcurl let me down last night... they suck... heated rollers rule!

Ahhhh that sounds very cute.
I think i am going to stick to my mouse and bendy curlers they work best for me, when I try and use the hot ones the effect is just not as good.

My main advice when curlling hair and using setting lotion is don't do it too often and use lots of good quality conditioner afterwards, I use Retread from Lush.

I used to do Irish dancing and took part in many competitions so I had to have mine curled most weekends and it frazzled my hair!
